It was as close as you could get to being required in an offensive deck for a while in the HGSS-On format. Mewtwo EX had everything it needed to dominate the game at the start. It was pretty nice if used in a deck using Psychic, Prism, or Blend Energy and if facing a low-Energy deck like Dusknoir/Accelgor. 120 damage for 3 Energy with a discard of only 1 was on a level comparable to Reshiram and Zekrom, for example. Psydrive wasn’t as useful since it required 2 Psychic and a Colorless Energy to use and was therefore couldn’t just gel with any type of deck, but the attack was still very good. Everything seemed to align for X Ball, and the attack was the biggest reason that Mewtwo EX was so dominant when it was first release as well as the reason for its continued success in various decks even after the game had caught up to its level of power. If you needed a bigger hit, you could add more Energy of any type, and Double Colorless Energy counted as 2 Energy for the purposes of this attack. This could add up in a hurry, and since your opponent would need Energy to attack at some point, Mewtwo EX would hit 80-100 rather often. The cost was 2 Colorless Energy to deal 20 damage for each Energy on both Mewtwo EX and the Defending Pokemon.
It was best to also bring along cards like Switch with Mewtwo EX if not running it alongside something like Eelektrik since 2 Energy was still a decent price to pay. Mewtwo EX mirrors were very common in the HGSS-On format. Mewtwo EX had a Weakness to Psychic, which just happened to mean other Mewtwo EX. Weaker attackers such as Vanilluxe needed a few turns to chip away.
The fact that some of those boosts have to be mentioned shows just how far that HP went. This amount was high enough to take almost any hit, the exceptions being against other Mewtwo EX and various attacks such as from Rayquaza EX sometimes as well as Black Kyurem EX and some attacks with Virbank City Gym and Hypnotoxic Laser support. While prices eventually went way down due to the release of a Mewtwo EX tin and other Pokemon EX gave plenty of competition, Mewtwo EX had all the tools to succeed for a very long time.ġ70 HP was pretty much expected for a Pokemon EX at the time, but that didn’t mean that it wasn’t bulky. Being a strong, bulky Pokemon that could fit into any type of deck would do that. Spending that much money on a new card was one heck of a gamble, and Mewtwo EX somehow managed to live up to all the expectations. It was selling for a similar price to what Luxray GL LV.X was at its peak… during pre-orders. Mewtwo EX was one of the most hyped Pokemon cards to ever be released.
